Exchange Links - How Do You Make Sure They Still Link To You?

Links are vital in Google’s Page Ranking so if you want your blog to score high, you need to accumulate links pointing to your blog as much as possible. In my previous post, I’ve written about the 7 Blogging Mistakes That Bloggers Do When Building Links. Read the post to learn more about which should be done to make sure that the links you create for your blog will bring you the optimum benefits.

Exchange link, a fast way to earn links to your blog, has become a common scene around the blogging community. Although Google is not in favor of exchange links and buying links, there are still a huge number of bloggers and webmasters who attempt to do it. The problem with exchange link is when your link exchange partners are not honest.

Firstly, I would like to make it clear that I am not a 100% advocate of exchange links. I believe that it’s good only when done in moderation.Dishonest Link Exchange Partners

When you have exchanged link with another blog, make sure that the link to your blog stays for as long as you keep the link to your exchange link partner. In my early days of blogging, I’ve come across lots of dishonest link exchange partners. Most of them removed the link to my blog after 2 months or so. Others linked to my blog with a ‘NOFOLLOW’ attribute. These are the things you should be avoiding when you look for a link exchange partner.

Reciprocal Link Checker - Check Your Exchange Link Partners

To make sure that your link exchange partners keep the link to your blog on their blog, you can either visit their blog and look for the link yourself or you can use a tool known as the Reciprocal Link Checker. It’s probaly easy to visit your link exchange partner’s blog to make sure that he/she keeps the link to your blog when you’ve got a few exchange link partners. For those who have exchanged link with several bloggers, Reciprocal Link Checker comes handy.

When you have decided to exchange links with other blogs, make sure that you keep a record of their URLs. This will allow you to check and make sure that the links are still working. Consider a weekly or a bi-monthly exchange link check to all your exchange link partners to make sure that they still link to you.

NoFollow Attribute

Any link created to your blog is not going to be recognized by Google when a “NOFOLLOW” attribute is used. Some exchange link partners may link to your blog but will implement the NOFOLLOW attribute to it. Remember that every DoFollow links pointing to your blog from other blogs are treated by Google as a vote of confidence to your blog. NoFollow attribute on the other hand will instruct Google to disregard it as a vote to your blog.

In order to make sure that the links created to your blog by your link exchange partners are ‘DOFOLLOW’ you can either view the source code of the blog using Source Code Viewer or you can use the Search Status Plugins available for Mozilla Firefox browser. To make your exchange link check, make it a habbit to keep a list of your exchange link partners’ URLs.

Beware of Link Farms!

When you build links to your blog, do not in any case participate to Link Farms. This is may sound an easy way to build the number of links to your blog but it only puts your blog at a high risk of being penalized by search engines, particularly Google. Here are some excerpt from different articles about Link Farms and why joining a Link Farm is not good. You can read the rest of the article by clickin on the links.

On the World Wide Web, a link farm is any group of web sites that all hyperlink to every other page in the group. Although some link farms can be created by hand, most are created through automated programs and services. A link farm is a form of spamming the index of a search engine (sometimes called spamexing or spamdexing). Other link exchange systems are designed to allow individual websites to selectively exchange links with other relevant websites and are not considered a form of spamdexing. - Wikipedia

A links farm is a big set -some thousands- of highly interlinked pages, either with a bogus content or some content scraped anywhere in little bits. It can also have a directory structure, generally by plundering DMOZ or some other open directory. When a search engine -let’s say Google- gets in a links farm, it may be a bit lost, but attempts to achieve his goal anyway, indexing tons of redundant links. - HTML4.com

I hope you found today’s post useful. If you have anything you wish to add to this post, please drop it at the comments. As I always love to tell my readers at the end of my articles, links on the comments of Blogging Mix has been made ‘DOFOLLOW’. You get link juice when you leave a comment. If you intend to SPAM, I just want you to know that I moderate my comments so you’re just wasting your time and energy.
