I was trying to explore other possibilities of getting my blog exposed to the blogosphere when I stumbled upon Fechr.com (Pronounced ‘Feature’). Rich Gilchrest who sphunn my article on What Makes Blogcatalog Different? made a post on expanding readership through Fechr. I’ve decided to give Fechr a try after reading his post. Fechr.com is a website that features other websites. When you visit Fechr.com you’ll find a website on Fechr’s website. Confusing? Allow me to simplify. Assuming that my blog gets featured at Fechr.com, all those who visit Fechr will find my blog on the front page. This means additional exposure of my blog to all the visitors of Fechr.
How do you get Featured at Fechr?
A review or a post about Fechr (like this one) is the only requirement to get your blog or website featured at Fechr. After you’re done with your post, you can submit your blog to be included on their list. Once your submission has been approved, you will be featured at Fechr for 24 hours. As of the moment, the service is free but as soon as their traffic improves, the administrators plan to charge a fee.
My Thoughts on Fechr
The idea of getting featured (your whole page) on another website is another great innovation that will surely click on the Blogging Community. I find Fechr really interesting that I was compelled to try and experience the service myself.
Unfortunately I see some problems that might arise once Fechr has been fully monetized. Right now, the service is free. All you need to do is make a review of the website to qualify for the service but as soon as it has become more popular, the website plans to charge a fee from those who want to take advantage of their service.
Challenges that Fechr Faces
1. The need to give reasons for repeated visits.
As of the moment, Fechr’s traffic are mostly from people who have read reviews on Fechr and who would like to be featured as well. People obviously don’t visit the site for the purpose of reading the contents of the blog or website currently featured. Fechr should come up with more reasons for their previous visitors to keep coming back for updates.
In my opinion Fechr should allow more interaction with it’s visitors. The success of Digg, Delicious or Reddit is mostly attributed to the contributions of their members. All these bookmarking sites allowed their members to vote and decide who gets to be featured on top. On the contrary, the administrators of Fechr are the sole decision makers of who gets featured. To get repeated visits, I suggest that Fechr should allow membership and that members should have a say on who gets featured on their site.
2. Question on quality of content once Fechr is monetized.
Everyone knows that Content is a key element for every website’s success. Assuming that Fechr charges websites who would like to be on their front page with no other prerequisite but the Service Fee, this will no doubt compromise Fechr’s quality of content. If that happens, only those websites who can afford will be able to get to Fechr’s front page. And not all these websites have quality content. Most of these websites that are willing to pay for this kind of service are often the ones that sell products or services. People have had enough of advertisements already. No one will visit Fechr to see a company featured on their front page promoting their latest SEO book or offering their Programming services. People want quality content and they want it free., If Fechr gives their visitors exactly what they want… Fechr draws itself closer to becoming successful.
3. The challenge to be different.
The challenge that Fechr needs to work on is the challenge to be different. Different in the sense that they have their own identity. That although their website has some similarities to other websites, they still have something unique to offer. Take BlogCatalog as an example. In a very short time, BlogCatalog was able to generate a huge number of loyal members (including myself). For a very short time as well, BlogCatalog has gaining more popularity over Yahoo owned Mybloglog. Tony and the rest of the BlogCatalog administrators has proven that you don’t need to be huge to become Big. You just need to listen to what your visitors/members think, give them reasons and incentives to visit and participate on your site, and have a sound strategy.
